On it are the items that I don't want to lose if I was away from home and the home vanished. If there is a 2 or 3 second or more pause before clicking, or you hear the arm seeking before the clicking, then freeing might help. These can be almost impossible to trace down having done it for HDD mfgr "autopsies" (they want to know why a drive failed too) One other strange thing involves the silicon I have many levels of backup.

I shut my computer down and unplugged and retried in my iMac and it worked fine. Anything is worth trying; when you don't have a whole lot of money to put into repair that may or may not work. Click Change.Select a new drive letter from the drop down list, preferably the one that is not normally used for this drive. The drive starts up, I hear the windows usb connect sound, but it doesn't show up on my computer.

I was then able to run Cap Restore and brought me to the right size. Here you go:

Manos Arvanitis on August 8, 2008 11:37 pm Looks like I have the same problem as ziki, and some others on this page. In the industry, we call this the click of death and it usually means the drive has experienced a physical failure, sometimes even catastrophic.

I tried your tool (after installing WinXP on it, which took me about 1 hour and a half) and the window read : Reported capacity : 10,005 MB Factory capacity : Wd External Hard Drive Not Showing Up i have used PC Inspector File Recovery and to no such luck it did not find the drive either. My 1 TB WD10EACS HDD is now OK… One week they functioned without problems Then they had only 32 MB Many programs did not succeed

MrDumdidum on November 2, 2007 I tried this on another computer and the same problem happened.

  • And, distilled water isn't conductive enough to cause problems in small amounts.
  • It only alters HDD firmware (HPA and DCO settings).
  • it didn't work.

Ive backed up my photos and what not, and am currently going on 4 hours and the drive is fine. HarshReality on February 5, 2008 6:12 pm I do not see any problem navigate here I'm not exactly sure why this works but I'm guessing it has something to do with the heads retracting because of the cold temperature. The drive does not show in the device manager or through My Computer. When I plugged them in again last week, 2 of them would spin up, click 3 times, spin down and then repeat that cycle. A warranty replacement is the only practical option.

Also, sometimes a damaged Master Boot Record may cause the BIOS and/or the Operating System to misdetect the true hard drive capacity. Wd External Hard Drive Drivers I used the freezing trick and it worked first time but I only manged to get 10GB of data. The only change that occurred was that there was less noise coming from the drive.

Up till then there were no problems….

Further down the list are my set of OS CDs, applications CDs. will it be possible to use usb mass storage devices in the future?

Why did WD say 320 on the hard drive when in reality it's only 298gb. Not all IDE/SATA adapters are supported though. Thanks
